The 5th edition of the annual joint military exercise ‘Dharma Guardian’ between the Indian Army and the Japan Ground Self Defence Force has commenced at the Mahajan Field Firing Ranges in Rajasthan. The exercise, which began on 25th February, is scheduled to run until 9th March 2024.
Aiming for Enhanced Military Cooperation
The primary objective of ‘Dharma Guardian’ is to foster military cooperation and enhance combined capabilities to execute joint operations in semi-urban environments under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter. The exercise emphasizes a high degree of physical fitness, joint planning, joint tactical drills, and the basics of special arms skills.
Tactical Drills and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’
Tactical drills to be practiced during the exercise include establishing a Temporary Operating Base, creating an Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) Grid, setting up Mobile Vehicle Check Posts, executing Cordon and Search Operations in a hostile village, Heliborne operations, and House Intervention Drills.
In addition, a Weapon and Equipment Display will be organized, showcasing the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative and the growing defense industrial capability of India.
High-Level Visit from Japan
Lieutenant General Togashi Yuichi, Commanding General, Eastern Army, Japan Ground Self Defence Force, is also scheduled to visit India on the sidelines of “Exercise Dharma Guardian”. The General officer will visit Mahajan Field Firing Ranges on 3rd March 2024 and witness a Combat Shooting demonstration, Special Heliborne Operation (SHBO), and House Intervention Drills.
Fostering Bilateral Relations
Exercise ‘Dharma Guardian’ will enable the two sides to share their best practices in Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures of conducting tactical operations. The exercise will also facilitate developing interoperability, bonhomie, and camaraderie between troops of both sides. This will enhance the level of defense cooperation, further fostering bilateral relations between the two friendly nations.
The joint exercise is a testament to the growing military and strategic ties between India and Japan, and it underscores the shared vision of a peaceful and stable Indo-Pacific region.
